Isaac Lemuel Howell letters, 1861-1862.

Letters from W. S. Allen, a member of the Second New Jersey Regiment describes work on forts and entrenchments, the urgent need for pay, and the inadequate fortifications of the Confederate Army and the positions it abandoned as it "ingloriously fled toward Manassas." He mentions seeing Seward, Cameron, Welles, McClellan, and other dignitaries while on a Sunday walk, and describes measles among the troops. Also, the Civil War cover contains the legend "The Loyal States - UNION - New Jersey." Letters from David Howell, Wyoming Seminary, Kingston, Pennsylvania, describing a student's typical day, living quarters, and courses.
